About this article

I've been reflecting deeply on my recent session titled "Break The Cycle You Inherited," and I felt called to share some of the profound insights that emerged. This work continues to amaze me, revealing how Vedic astrology serves as an extraordinary lens for understanding the intricate patterns we've inherited and our power to consciously transform them.

My journey into this ancient wisdom began twenty-five years ago during one of the most challenging periods of my life. A debilitating lower back injury involving a herniated disc left me immobilized, fearful, and searching desperately for meaning and agency in my situation. During those dark months of youth and uncertainty, I discovered the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, which became, and continue to be, my beacon of light. These sacred texts provided me with a profound framework for understanding reality and comprehending the fundamental constructs of the mind.

I find the Patanjali Yoga Sutras absolutely fascinating. They form the bedrock and foundation of my entire body of work, which incorporates Patanjali meditation and an earnest endeavor to understand psychology from a Vedic perspective. My background in the performing arts naturally led me to Indian music, creating a beautiful intersection with my spiritual path.

In 2010, I had the tremendous privilege of meeting my guru, K. Sridhar, perhaps the top sarod player alive right now. His unique ability to teach any instrument, drawing from the core methodology of raga music and shruti (microtones), transformed my understanding completely.

It was at K. Sridhar's specific request that I delved into the rigorous study of Jyotisha and Indian music, creating an integrated foundation that allows me to address the human experience from multiple, interconnected dimensions. This holistic approach forms the heart of everything I share with you today.

Understanding Jyotisha: The Science of Light

To truly grasp the transformative power of my "Origin Stories" work, we must first understand the essence of Jyotisha. This Sanskrit term derives from two beautiful words: "Jyot," meaning light, and "Ish," meaning science. Together, they create "the science of light." Jyotisha is far more than a system of divination. It represents a profound scientific discipline rooted in thousands of years of ancient observation and calculation, recognized as one of the angas (limbs) of the Vedas, serving as the "eyes of the Vedas" through which vast universal knowledge becomes visible and comprehensible.

My primary methodology, especially within "Origin Stories" and its focus on family patterns and ancestry, involves the detailed analysis of the birth chart, or kundali. This chart is a highly precise, individualized map generated using your exact birth time (even the minute matters significantly), the precise place of your birth, and the specific day of your birth. With this crucial information, I input these details into specialized software, a modern convenience compared to past astrologers who painstakingly performed all calculations manually.

The resulting output is a comprehensive picture, a cosmic map that delineates the precise positions of all planets at the moment of your birth. It reveals which constellations were rising and descending on the horizon, as well as those visible in the sky or positioned underneath. Through years of dedicated study, I've developed the intricate understanding needed to interpret the complex relationships between these planetary placements, the various astrological patterns, and the unique "yogas" or configurations that signify a person's potential and specific life experiences.

Ultimately, I understand the birth chart as a karmic map. It's a snapshot, a cosmic photograph taken at the moment of your birth, freezing the celestial clock to reveal the specific destiny patterns you are born into and the unique work you are here to undertake in this lifetime.

The Foundation: Vasana and Your Inherited Patterns

A critical concept that the birth chart illuminates is vasana, a term drawn directly from the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Vasana means "a collection of karmas and samskaras," and understanding this concept is essential for our work together.

Karma refers to actions, and the understanding here is profound: every action has a cause and an effect. We are not born as blank slates. Instead, we enter this life carrying the karma of our predecessors and ancestors. This inherited karma profoundly influences our inherent inclinations and dispositions, shaping the challenges we are predisposed to work through.

Samskara are what I describe as "deep mental grooves." These manifest as our natural tendencies, habitual ways of being, and even our addictions and practices. They represent the ingrained patterns of thought and behavior that are deeply embedded within our being, often operating below our conscious awareness.

By examining your birth chart, I can discern these deep-seated vasanas, these collections of karmas and samskaras. This insight extends far beyond understanding the past. It empowers us to address both past and future consciously, offering the potential to become healers of patterns that have been going on for a long time. The birth chart also reveals your inherent gifts and strengths, which are equally part of your ancestral legacy. Like a precise cosmic clock, Jyotisha shows us what is happening in the present moment so that we can optimally address both the future and the past.

Vedic Psychology: A Universal Paradigm for Self-Understanding

I am passionate about sharing how Jyotisha, coupled with the Patanjali Sutras, forms the crux of Vedic psychology. This ancient system offers a distinct and profound alternative to Western psychological frameworks. While I appreciate Western psychology for inspiring engagement with the present and cultivating contentment, and acknowledge its relatively recent history spanning perhaps 200 or 300 years, Vedic psychology through Jyotisha and Patanjali Yoga Sutras boasts a lineage of thousands of years.

The fundamental difference between these approaches lies in their ultimate aim. Vedic psychology is designed to place you inside of a universal paradigm. Its primary objective is to help individuals understand reality as it truly is, the larger universal environment, and then, from that understanding, to gain deeper comprehension of one's own self and patterns. The ultimate goal is to enable you to fit well into the bigger picture of existence. This holistic and universal perspective represents the hallmark of the Vedic approach.

The Instruments of the Mind: Understanding Your Antakarana

A central pillar of my "Origin Stories" work, particularly when addressing ancestry and family patterns, involves the detailed examination of the Antakarana. This Sanskrit term refers to the "instruments of the mind," and these instruments are clearly visible and discernible through the birth chart. Understanding these fundamental constructs of the mind is paramount for navigating inherited patterns and fostering personal agency.

I find it particularly fascinating to examine these constructs as unique individual expressions of the self, even though in reality, their interactions occur with lightning speed. Let me guide you through each aspect:

Ahamkara (Ego)

This powerful mental instrument translates literally as "I am the doer." It represents your fundamental sense of separate identity, the deeply ingrained feeling that "you are you," distinct from others and everything else. It's the mechanism through which you form a concretized identity, a sense of self, feeling separate from what you are interacting with or observing.

Through the birth chart, I can assess the nature of your ego with remarkable precision. A strong ego can manifest as a highly durable and stable sense of self, making it effortless for you to exert your will, proclaim your identity, and gain traction in your actions in the world. However, a strong ego can also exhibit inflammation or bloatedness, leading to difficulty in comprehending why things don't unfold precisely as desired, potentially becoming a detriment rather than an enhancement to life.

Conversely, a weak ego can present challenges in identifying with anything, knowing your direction or desires, or effectively exerting your will to achieve traction. This often translates into self-deprecating thoughts such as "I'm not enough." There is significant nuance involved in interpreting the ego's expression within a birth chart, which is why this work requires such careful attention and understanding.

Manas (Emotional Mind)

This is where a substantial portion of my work resides, especially given my integration of music, which has a profound capacity to address and heal the emotional mind. The Manas represents the "emotional, soft, warm animal of you," creating a stark contrast to the rigid structure of the ego.

The Manas is primarily responsible for perceiving the world through your senses. It's the part of you that savors tastes, appreciates beautiful sights, delights in pleasant smells, and processes internal sensations like hunger or fullness. It's how you interpret and measure your reality through sensory input. The Manas also encompasses the subtle material of emotions, dictating how you feel about the unfolding of your reality.

The Moon serves as a crucial indicator of a person's manasic structure in the birth chart. By observing the Moon's placement within a specific Nakshatra (the micro-zodiac of 27 divisions, offering deeper specificity than the 12 standard constellations), I gain immense insight into how you process your reality and emotions. This includes whether you process information quickly or slowly, whether you are prone to perfectionism (constantly trying to fix or organize things), if you lean towards nurturing and healing, or if you seek mystical and spiritual meaning in your experiences.

The birth chart can reveal, with uncanny accuracy, how you feel about your life and process traumas. The Manas is also linked to strategies like "numbing out" when emotionally overwhelmed, patterns that often trace back through generations.

Buddhi (Intellect)

This represents the "deciding part of the mind," embodying the ethical and moral dimensions of our being. The Buddhi receives the sensory information gathered by the Manas and then makes crucial decisions about what to do with it.

A strong Buddhi can be a powerful asset, enabling you to navigate life's challenges effectively, even if you possess a weak ego. Such an individual, despite perhaps feeling "I'm not enough," can still exert their will in the world due to their clear intellect and ethical compass.

Conversely, an afflicted or weak Buddhi can lead to significant challenges. Even with a strong ego and capacity for self-exertion, if the intellect is compromised, it can result in indecisiveness, pervasive doubt, or a general feeling of being compromised and unsure of which direction to take. The word "Buddhi" itself means "to awaken" or "to wake up," highlighting its role in conscious discernment. It categorizes perceptions and then dictates appropriate action.

Chitta (Subconscious)

This is the foundational matrix or subconscious through which all the contents of the mind (Ahamkara, Manas, and Buddhi) move. It represents the underlying field of consciousness, the vast space within which all mental activity occurs.

"Origin Stories": Your Pathway to Ancestral Healing

My "Origin Stories" program is meticulously designed to help you break the cycle you inherited and cultivate a profound sense of agency in consciously shaping your reality. It serves as a powerful reminder that you're part of something very, very old and that your life is fundamentally a series of patterns.

The program includes four private, one-on-one sessions supplemented by pre-recorded materials. Each private session is preceded by my dedicated hour of studying your chart, focusing specifically on your Antakarana. Here's how our journey unfolds together:

Session 1: Understanding Your Mind

Our initial session serves as a foundational orientation, helping you understand the unique workings of your own mind by deeply examining your ahamkara (ego), manas (emotional mind), and buddhi (intellect) through your birth chart. These specific features in your chart indicate a particular vasana, a karmic disposition, or a pre-existing pattern that will influence your actions in the world based on your self-perception, emotional responses, and decision-making processes.

I provide you with practical assignments to pay close attention to these aspects of your mind week by week. This involves actively questioning recurring thought patterns. For instance, if you have a weak ego and the thought "I'm not enough" frequently vibrates in your mind, I encourage you to pay attention, question its veracity, and consciously redirect it. This process fosters a conscious relationship with your Antakarana.

Session 2: The Maternal Line and the Manas

This session marks the beginning of our ancestral exploration. Remarkably, through your birth chart (without needing your mother's chart), I can discern insights into your mother's potential manas, ego, and buddhi. Our conversation focuses on how patterns that originated with your mother played out through her and were subsequently inherited by you, influencing your own life.

This exploration often generates deep compassion, extending our discussion to your maternal grandmother and great-grandmother, exploring their experiences, dispositions, and what life might have been like for them. There is particular emphasis on the manas (the feeling self), and I encourage you to meditate on it, noticing your daily processing of events and your knee-jerk reactions, whether you react quickly or withdraw.

This session helps you see yourself not just as an individual, but as a momentum of patterns passed down through generations. The insights that emerge often bring profound understanding and healing to long-standing family dynamics.

Session 3: The Paternal Line and Family Dynamics

Building on our previous session, we delve into the paternal line, similarly examining your father's experiences, his potential manas, and ego as reflected in your chart. Our discussion expands to include your paternal grandfather and great-grandfather.

It's typically in this session that the wheel of family dynamics and ancestry begins to spin more broadly, exploring the intricate interplay between both maternal and paternal ancestral lines and their influence on your life. The patterns become clearer, and you begin to see the larger tapestry of inherited tendencies and gifts.

Session 4: Profound Meditation and Ancestor Reverence

Our concluding session imparts a simple and very profound meditation. This practice teaches you how to access an inner quiet space, even during moments of being triggered. It allows you to pull back from the immediate trigger, regulate your breath, slow down your internal experience, and observe the interplay of your Ahamkara, Manas, and Buddhi around that particular trigger. This detached observation fosters a softening and dissolution of the trigger's intensity.

Additionally, I teach a powerful ancestor meditation, which involves consciously inviting ancestors to offer their support. This practice aims to help heal generational wounds and to uplift and acknowledge the gifts that have been passed down. I often schedule these sessions to align with Pitru Paksha (the ancestor fortnight) and eclipse season (typically September and October), periods when the veil is thin, making ancestral connection more palpable. This meditation is an act of reverence, acknowledging where we come from and inviting signs and aid from ancestors for healing and guidance.

Breaking Cycles and Honoring Gifts

A primary objective of "Origin Stories" is to empower you to identify patterns worthy of breaking. These are the patterns that have perpetuated long enough, and through our work together, you gain the clarity and agency to be the one who consciously stops them. I help you discern whether these patterns reside more in the manas, ego, or buddhi structure, and how to best address them, while also fostering compassion for those who came before.

Crucially, our program also emphasizes the recognition and honoring of the beautiful gifts and strengths that are also inherited from your ancestry. These positive ancestral legacies are frequently overlooked or taken for granted. I work to help you truly digest and be grateful for these strengths, recognizing them as gifts from the efforts of those who came before.

Breakthroughs are a common occurrence in "Origin Stories" sessions. These can range from gaining tremendous compassion for a parent's struggles after recognizing a shared pattern, to the profound realization that a seemingly normal ability or stability (such as feeling easily supported by life, or making the right decisions) is, in fact, a special ancestral gift not universally shared.

These insights often emerge organically through the conversational nature of our sessions, which stirs the pot and brings forth memories, insights, and self-recognition. I often hear clients declare, "I'm playing out this pattern completely that my mom and my dad played out and now I'm doing it too and I don't want to do this and now I want to be the one to stop this and to do it in a new way."

Discerning Ancestral Patterns from Personal Choices

When people ask me how to differentiate between a life challenge stemming from ancestral patterns versus one's own choices, I explain that it's typically a mixture of both. However, ancestral patterns often appear as what I describe as vasana. When analyzing a chart, I look for a lot of focus pouring into one or two specific areas of the chart, or sometimes more complex distributions, based on planetary relationships and yogas. These concentrated areas of karmic focus are often indicative of ancestral influence.

Another key indicator is that the karmic disposition of your Antakarana, the fundamental nature of your mind's instruments, is baked in at a very young age. While individuals evolve and grow, this deep-seated part of us is strongly connected to ancestry.

Additionally, I heavily utilize the dasha system within Vedic astrology. This system reveals the time phases you are moving through and the specific karma unfolding at any given moment. By studying the dasha system from the moment of birth, I gain information about which patterns are more profoundly ancestral and therefore require focused attention within the context of "Origin Stories."

Your Invitation to Transform

"Origin Stories" provides a unique opportunity to pause the flow of your life and deeply examine the patterns you are currently playing out. It empowers you to consciously decide what patterns you wish to continue, and critically, which ones it is time for you to stop. It's about being the one to bravely break this particular cycle, all while acknowledging and embracing the incredible gifts that have also been bestowed upon you through your lineage.

This work has transformed my own life and the lives of countless clients who have courageously embarked on this journey of self-discovery and ancestral healing. Through the ancient wisdom of Jyotisha and the profound insights of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, we can truly become healers of generational patterns while honoring the beautiful legacy we've inherited.
