What Diwali means
Diwali is a family of festivals gathered around the new moon. In much of North India it remembers Rama’s return to Ayodhya; in other regions it honours Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, Krishna’s victory over Narakasura, or the beginning of a new business year. Those stories are not interchangeable, but they share the image of light made visible in darkness. The word Deepavali means a row of lights. For a reader observing alone, the heart of the day is not the size of the celebration: it is the deliberate act of making a hospitable place and sharing what is good. Dates and the most important evening vary by tradition.
How to observe it
Light a lamp at the local evening window, pause for a few minutes, and call or message someone you want to bless. If you use candles, keep them on a stable, heatproof surface and extinguish them before bed.
Outside India
Diwali falls at different clock times around the world because sunset is local. A community may move a programme to the nearest weekend, while the lunar date remains the same.
For yoga teachers
Tonight we make light tangible. Let a class explore the balance between effort and ease, then close by offering one quality we want to carry into the dark.

Why is my Diwali time different from India?
The festival date follows Indian lunar reckoning, but the lighting window follows the sunset in your own city.
