Udupi

The Matha City

Udupi is a coastal town synonymous with the Krishna Temple and the eight Mathas (monasteries) established by the philosopher Madhvacharya. It is the heart of Dvaita (dualism) Vedanta. The daily rituals here are elaborate and beautiful, centered on the small window (Kanakana Kindi) through which Lord Krishna is viewed. It is clean, organized, and deeply religious.

The center of Dvaita philosophy. The Anna Daan (mass feeding) here is legendary and considered a sacred offering.
