About this tour

Amma Yatra - South Kerala & Tamil Nadu

9 Days in the Living Tradition of Unconditional Love at the Feet of the Hugging Saint

Duration: 9 Days / 8 Nights

There is a woman in Kerala who has embraced more than forty million people. She does not ask your religion, your language, or your story. She simply holds you. For millions of Western seekers, receiving Amma's embrace — her darshan — is described as the moment when something abstract in their spiritual life became suddenly, undeniably real. This journey is built around that encounter, and around everything the sacred southern tip of India offers to the sincere international traveler. You will spend four nights immersed in Amritapuri Ashram, the global headquarters of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, located on a narrow strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the Kerala backwaters in Kollam district. Here the day begins before dawn with bhajans echoing across the water, and ends with the kind of silence that only comes from being genuinely held by a community of several thousand people dedicated to a single practice. You will participate in seva — selfless service — as Amma's primary teaching. You will attend darshan and receive her embrace. From Amritapuri the journey moves south to Kanyakumari, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean converge at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent. This is one of the most spiritually charged geographical points in India — a place where three oceans meet, where the goddess Kanyakumari stands facing the sea, and where the land itself feels like it is coming to an end in order to give way to something larger. The combination of Amritapuri's living community and Kanyakumari's elemental grandeur creates a journey that moves from the intimate to the vast, from the human to the cosmic. A maximum of eight participants travel together with an experienced local guide and a dedicated Amritapuri liaison who knows the ashram community and can support your experience throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amritapuri Ashram and what can international visitors expect there?
Amritapuri is the global headquarters of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma), located on a narrow strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the Kerala backwaters in Kollam district. Several thousand residents from dozens of countries live and serve here permanently. The day begins before dawn with bhajans echoing across the water. Visitors participate in seva (selfless service), attend daily programs, and receive Amma's embrace (darshan). The atmosphere is one of extraordinary collective devotion — unlike any ashram experience available elsewhere in India.
What is darshan with Amma and what does the experience feel like?
Darshan is the Sanskrit word for a sacred encounter with a holy person or deity. With Amma, darshan takes the form of a personal embrace — she holds each person who comes to her, often for several seconds, whispering or chanting into their ear. The wait in line can be many hours, and most participants report that the waiting itself becomes a profound practice in patience and presence. For millions of Western seekers, receiving Amma's embrace is described as the moment when something abstract in their spiritual life became suddenly, undeniably real. Your Smukti guide helps you navigate the darshan process.
What is seva at Amritapuri and is it compulsory for tour participants?
Seva (selfless service) is Amma's primary teaching — the ashram runs entirely through the voluntary labour of its residents and visitors. Common seva activities include kitchen work, cleaning, gardening, and serving food. For tour participants, seva is the primary way of integrating into the ashram's rhythm and understanding its philosophy from the inside. It is the heart of the experience, not an optional extra. Most participants find it unexpectedly moving — the quality of consciousness in a room of people performing ordinary tasks with extraordinary intention is unlike ordinary work.
What is Kanyakumari and why is it included in this itinerary?
Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent — the geographical point where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean converge. It is one of the most energetically charged locations in India: a Shakti Peetha (seat of the goddess), the site where Swami Vivekananda meditated for three days before sailing to America in 1892, and a place of extraordinary natural beauty where the sunrise and sunset are visible over open ocean. The combination of Amritapuri's intimate community and Kanyakumari's elemental grandeur creates a journey that moves from the human scale to the cosmic.
What airports should I fly into for the Amma Yatra?
The tour operates from Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) and Cochin International Airport (COK). Both are well-connected to major international hubs including Dubai, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Kuala Lumpur. Direct flights from London and some European cities also operate seasonally. Your Smukti guide meets you at the airport on arrival and stays with you through check-in at departure.
What should I wear at Amritapuri Ashram?
Modest, simple clothing is required — loose trousers or long skirts, covered shoulders. White clothing is preferred within the ashram as it reflects the community's emphasis on purity and simplicity. Smukti sends detailed dress and conduct guidance before travel. Clothing is available to purchase at the ashram shop if needed on arrival. Remove shoes before entering all temple and ashram spaces.
Is the Ayurveda massage at Vivekananda Kendra NARDEP included in the tour cost?
Yes — a 90-minute traditional Ayurveda massage at Vivekananda Kendra NARDEP in Kanyakumari is included in the tour price. The centre was founded in the 1960s and integrates Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, research, and social service through the philosophy of Athmabodhanam (soul awakening). It is a deeply restorative session scheduled after the most intense days of the ashram experience, allowing the body to integrate what the journey has opened. Extended personal treatments are available separately at additional cost.
How many participants travel together on the Amma Yatra?
Maximum 8 participants. The intimacy of the Amritapuri experience — navigating darshan, settling into ashram life, processing what arises — is best held in a very small group. Your Smukti guide and a dedicated Amritapuri liaison who knows the ashram community deeply accompany the group throughout. This is the most intimate format Smukti offers.
