Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to join a spiritual tour in India?
Most international travelers need a visa to enter India. We recommend applying for an e-Visa online at least 4 weeks before travel. Our team provides a support letter if needed for your visa application. Most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) are eligible for the India e-Visa.
Is it safe for solo travelers — especially women?
Yes. All Smukti tours include a dedicated English-speaking guide who accompanies the group at every step. Our groups are small (max 12 people), we use pre-vetted accommodation throughout, and we monitor safety at every destination. Many of our past travelers have been solo women from the US, UK, and Australia.
How large are the tour groups?
Groups are capped at 12 travelers. Smaller groups mean more personal access at sacred sites, quieter temple experiences, and a more intimate journey with your guide and fellow seekers.
What is included in the tour price?
All Smukti tours include accommodation, all meals during the itinerary, entrance fees, in-destination transport, airport transfers at the start and end, and your dedicated English-speaking guide. International flights are not included.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a small admin fee. 30–59 days: 50% refund. Under 30 days: no refund. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation. Contact us at namaste@smukti.com for any special circumstances.
What are the Pancha Bhuta temples?
The Pancha Bhuta Stalam are five ancient Shiva temples in South India, each enshrining one of the five elements of nature: earth (Kanchipuram), water (Thiruvanaikaval), fire (Thiruvannamalai), air (Kalahasti), and space (Chidambaram). This circuit is considered one of the most powerful pilgrimage routes in the Hindu tradition.
Is this tour suitable for people interested in Ayurveda or yoga?
Yes. The Healing India tour is designed around the intersection of spiritual energy and healing traditions. We include visits to temples associated with healing deities and free time at ashrams where you can attend yoga or meditation sessions. Some itineraries also include an optional Ayurvedic consultation.
What are the Pancha Bhuta Stalam temples and where are they located?
The Pancha Bhuta Stalam are five ancient South Indian temples each representing one of the five elements: Srikalahasteeswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh (Air/Vayu), Ekambaranathar Temple in Kanchipuram (Earth/Prithvi), Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai (Fire/Agni), Jambukeswarar Temple in Trichy (Water/Apas), and Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram (Ether/Akasha). Each has been in continuous worship for over a thousand years. The tour visits all five in sequence over 10 days.
Do I need to be Hindu to participate in temple rituals on this tour?
No. This tour is specifically designed for international travellers of all faiths and backgrounds. Entry to the outer temple precincts is open to all visitors. For the inner sanctum rituals and fire ceremonies, your Smukti guides and the hereditary temple priests facilitate participation that is respectful and accessible regardless of your background. You are never required to perform rituals — observation and presence are equally valid.
What is a dawn fire ceremony (Agni puja) and can international visitors participate?
An Agni puja is a Vedic fire ritual performed by hereditary temple priests at dawn, in which offerings of ghee, herbs, and grains are made to sacred fire while Sanskrit mantras are chanted. On this tour, you participate in dawn fire ceremonies led by priests whose families have conducted these rituals for generations. International visitors can sit within the ceremony, make offerings if they wish, and receive the sacred ash (vibhuti) blessing. Your guide provides full context before each ceremony.
What is the Girivalam walk at Tiruvannamalai and is it compulsory?
Girivalam is the 14-kilometre sacred circumambulation of Arunachala hill, performed barefoot by hundreds of thousands of devotees — especially on full moon nights. On this tour the walk is structured with silent meditation for the first 2 km, contemplative walking with guided reflection questions, and community support so participants help each other complete the circuit. It takes 4–5 hours at a comfortable pace. While deeply recommended, alternative arrangements can be made for participants with physical limitations.
How is this tour different from a regular yoga retreat in India?
A yoga retreat is centred on personal practice in one location. This is an immersive pilgrimage through five living temple traditions that have been unbroken for over a millennium. You are not studying about these elements — you are entering the actual sites where Tamil devotees have preserved authentic elemental practices for a thousand years. Daily group ceremonies, interaction with hereditary priests, Ramana Maharshi cave meditation, Auroville, and Vallalar sites make this a hands-on transmission of living knowledge rather than a retreat from the world.
What is the group size and why does it matter for this tour?
Maximum 14 participants. This limit is intentional — access to hereditary priests, participation in inner sanctum ceremonies, and the intimacy required for genuine cross-cultural learning cannot be sustained with a large group. Past participants consistently describe the small group as one of the most valuable aspects of the experience: conversations deepen, guides can respond to each person's questions, and the quality of access Smukti arranges at each temple depends on arriving as a small, prepared group rather than a tourist crowd.
What should I pack for a 10-day temple immersion in South India?
Lightweight, modest, loose-fitting clothing in neutral colours (cotton is best for the heat). For temple entry: women need a dupatta or shawl to cover the head and shoulders; men need a dhoti or lungi at some temples (available to borrow or buy for a few rupees). Bring comfortable footwear you can remove and carry easily — you will be barefoot inside every temple. A small day bag, water bottle, sunscreen, and any personal medications. The tour provides a detailed packing list after booking.
Are all meals vegetarian and is the food safe for Western stomachs?
Yes — all meals throughout the tour are pure vegetarian (no eggs, no meat, no fish), freshly prepared, and served in clean, trusted establishments that Smukti has vetted over years of running tours. South Indian cuisine — rice, dal, sambar, chutneys, idli, dosa — is gentle, nutritious, and generally very well tolerated. Participants are advised to avoid street food outside scheduled meals for the first few days while their digestive systems adjust. Filtered water is provided at all times.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
October through March is ideal — temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are between 22–32°C, humidity is lower, and the main festival seasons make temple atmospheres especially alive. April–June can be very hot (35–42°C). July–September is monsoon season, which brings green landscapes but occasional disruption to outdoor activities. Full moon nights during the tour period are particularly significant — the Girivalam at Tiruvannamalai draws massive crowds and is a remarkable experience if timing aligns.
Can solo female travellers join this tour safely?
Yes. Smukti runs regular tours with solo female international participants and the small, guided group format provides genuine safety and companionship throughout. South Indian temple towns are generally conservative and respectful environments. Your Smukti guide navigates all logistics, accompanies the group at all times, and is experienced in supporting international women travellers through these spaces. Past solo female participants are available to speak with prospective travellers on request.
