Description

The southern tip of India — the land between Kanyakumari and the Kerala backwaters —
is one of the most spiritually concentrated geographies on the subcontinent. Here,
within a relatively small area, the lives of some of India's most significant saints
and teachers intersect.

Swami Vivekananda meditated at Kanyakumari on the rock that now bears his name,
and sailed from this point to America to deliver the address that introduced
Vedanta to the Western world. Agasthiyar — the ancient Siddha sage described as
the father of Tamil language and medicine — is said to have meditated in the hills
above Kanyakumari. Sree Narayana Guru walked this coast and transformed it.
Mayamma — the extraordinary woman saint of Kanyakumari who gave everything she
had to the poor and whose life was a constant lived expression of devotion —
lived and died here.

Swami Sivananda — founder of the Divine Life Society, author of over two hundred
books on yoga and Vedanta, and the teacher whose students spread Sivananda Yoga
across the Western world — was born in Pattamadai, a quiet town in Tirunelveli
district seventy kilometres north of Kanyakumari.

Mata Amritanandamayi's ashram at Amritapuri in Kollam brings a living dimension
to this landscape of saints.

This route moves through all of these encounters, punctuated by river bathing in
the sacred Tamirabarani, by the contemplative silence of Varkala's cliffs, and
by the extraordinary Santhigiri Ashram in Thiruvananthapuram.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, Trivandrum — Santhigiri Ashram
- Airport pickup from Trivandrum International Airport.
- Check-in at your hotel.
- Afternoon visit to Santhigiri Ashram — one of the most significant spiritual and healing institutions in contemporary Kerala, founded in 1964 by Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru in the hills above Thiruvananthapuram.
- The ashram's iconic Lotus Parnasala — a lotus-shaped meditation and prayer hall — and its comprehensive integration of Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine within the Athmabodhanam philosophy (the awakening of the soul) make it a living example of what a modern Indian spiritual institution can be.
- Your group will experience one of Santhigiri's healing massage therapy sessions — traditional Ayurvedic and Siddha treatments conducted by trained therapists in the ashram setting.
- Arranged Q&A conversation with a senior member of the community on the Athmabodhanam teaching and the life and vision of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru.
- Evening orientation for the journey ahead.
Day 2: Kanyakumari — Arrival, Devi, the Three Oceans
- Drive from Trivandrum to Kanyakumari (approximately two and a half hours).
- Arrival at the southern tip of India — the point where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean converge at the land's final edge.
- Check-in at your hotel facing the water.
- Afternoon visit to the Devi Kanyakumari Temple.
- The goddess here is Parvati in her form as an eternally young woman who never married, standing at the edge of the ocean in permanent devotion.
- Her marriage to Shiva was prevented by divine intervention, and the unfulfilled longing she carries — which devotees regard as the concentrated shakti of the entire southern tip of India — is said to make this one of the most energetically potent goddess sites in the country.
- Evening at the seafront as the sun descends.
- The light at Kanyakumari at dusk, over the meeting of the three seas, is without comparison anywhere in India.
Day 3: Kanyakumari — Vivekananda Rock, Agasthiyar, Marunthuvazh Malai, Mayamma
- Full day in Kanyakumari.
- Dawn at the Triveni Sangam — the confluence — for sunrise.
- This morning light is the most famous experience of Kanyakumari and it justifies the reputation entirely.
- Morning: boat journey to Vivekananda Rock Memorial.
- In December 1892, Swami Vivekananda swam to this rock and meditated for three days before traveling to the West.
- Your guide provides a complete account of Vivekananda's significance in the transmission of Indian spiritual wisdom to the West.
- Late morning: visit to the sites associated with Agasthiyar.
- Agasthiyar's presence in this landscape is reflected through Siddha medicine, Kalaripayattu, and continuing healing traditions.
- Afternoon: Marunthuvazh Malai — the last hill of India.
- The climb rewards with a panoramic view across approximately thirty percent of Kanyakumari district — the three oceans visible on the horizon.
- Go in the late afternoon when the light is extraordinary.
- Evening: visit to sites associated with Mayamma — the woman saint of Kanyakumari.
- Your guide provides an account of her life and the devotional tradition around her.
- Sharing circle.
Day 4: Pattamadai — Birthplace of Swami Sivananda, River Tamirabarani
- Morning drive from Kanyakumari to Pattamadai (approximately two hours).
- Visit the birthplace of Swami Sivananda Saraswati.
- Your guide provides a complete account of Sivananda's life and the significance of his lineage.
- Arranged conversation with a local scholar or devotee.
- Afternoon: visit to the Tamirabarani River.
- River bathing arranged for the group — a direct encounter with one of South India's sacred rivers.
- Your guide explains its significance in the Siddha tradition.
Day 5: Tenkasi — Thirumalai Murugan, Travel North
- Morning drive to Tenkasi (approximately one hour).
- Visit to Thirumalai Murugan Temple.
- Your guide explains the Murugan tradition and its importance in Tamil spirituality.
- Afternoon: drive north toward Kollam.
- The landscape transition from Tamil Nadu to Kerala reflects a shift in atmosphere as much as geography.
Day 6: Amritapuri Ashram — First Day
- Arrival at Amritapuri Ashram.
- Registration, room assignment, and orientation with your Smukti ashram liaison.
- Morning programs begin early — bhajans, meditation, and seva structure the day.

- First darshan if Amma is giving programs.
- Allow the first day to simply be a settling in.
