About this tour

Spiritual Journey through Southern India

15 days guided experience in the tropical southern India covering over 900 miles

Duration: 14Nights 15Days

Smukti’s flagship tour, the Spiritual Journey through Southern India, begins at the shore temples of Mahabalipuram near Chennai and concludes on the serene cliffs of Varkala, Kerala. Along the way, you’ll step gently into the daily rhythms of 1,000-year-old traditions, guided by historians, priests, scholars, and families who have lovingly preserved these sacred ways for generations.

This is not ordinary spiritual tourism, it is a heartfelt invitation into India’s living wisdom traditions, still practiced in their original settings. You’ll take part in temple rituals usually closed to outsiders, receive personal blessings and guidance from spiritual elders, and witness lineages of devotion that remain unbroken for centuries.

Three sacred dimensions meet on this journey: the living devotion of daily temple life, the timeless architecture and poetry of Tamil spiritual civilization, and the vibrant continuity of saints and seekers who keep these traditions alive. In temples where stone deities are adorned with fresh flowers and thousand-year-old hymns echo at dawn, you’re not just visiting—you’re entering into a world of authentic spiritual practice that exists nowhere else on earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to join a spiritual tour in India?
Most international travelers need a visa to enter India. We recommend applying for an e-Visa online at least 4 weeks before travel. Our team provides a support letter if needed for your visa application. Most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) are eligible for the India e-Visa.
Is it safe for solo travelers — especially women?
Yes. All Smukti tours include a dedicated English-speaking guide who accompanies the group at every step. Our groups are small (max 12 people), we use pre-vetted accommodation throughout, and we monitor safety at every destination. Many of our past travelers have been solo women from the US, UK, and Australia.
How large are the tour groups?
Groups are capped at 12 travelers. Smaller groups mean more personal access at sacred sites, quieter temple experiences, and a more intimate journey with your guide and fellow seekers.
What is included in the tour price?
All Smukti tours include accommodation, all meals during the itinerary, entrance fees, in-destination transport, airport transfers at the start and end, and your dedicated English-speaking guide. International flights are not included.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a small admin fee. 30–59 days: 50% refund. Under 30 days: no refund. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation. Contact us at namaste@smukti.com for any special circumstances.
Which states does the Southern India spiritual journey cover?
This tour covers key spiritual destinations across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, including temple towns, coastal pilgrimage sites, and ashram stays. The exact itinerary is shared at booking confirmation and includes a combination of Shaivite and Vaishnavite sacred sites.
Can this tour be done as a private group?
Yes. We offer private group departures for families, yoga groups, and corporate wellness retreats. Private tours allow us to customise the itinerary, pacing, and accommodation tier to suit your group's needs. Contact us at namaste@smukti.com to discuss your requirements.
What is Smukti's flagship South India spiritual tour and what makes it different?
The Spiritual Journey through Southern India is Smukti's founding tour — a 15-day immersion beginning at the shore temples of Mahabalipuram near Chennai and concluding on the cliffs of Varkala, Kerala. What distinguishes it is access: participants take part in temple rituals usually closed to outsiders, receive personal blessings from spiritual elders, and enter lineages of devotion unbroken for centuries. This is not sightseeing — it is an invitation into India's living wisdom traditions, still practiced in their original settings by families who have maintained them for generations.
Which UNESCO World Heritage temples are visited on this tour?
Three UNESCO World Heritage temples are included: the Shore Temple complex at Mahabalipuram (7th–8th century Pallava rock-cut architecture), the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur (built by the Chola emperor Raja Raja I in 1010 CE, with a 66-metre vimana that cast no shadow at noon), and the Srirangam Temple complex at Trichy (the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world, covering 156 acres across seven concentric enclosures). Your guide provides architectural and spiritual context at each.
What is Girivalam at Tiruvannamalai and can international visitors join?
Girivalam is the sacred barefoot circumambulation of Arunachala hill — 14 kilometres — performed by devotees of Lord Shiva who regard the mountain as Shiva himself in the form of fire. On this tour, the evening Girivalam is a group experience supported by your guide, with the option to join the thousands of Tamil pilgrims who walk it nightly. International visitors join freely and are welcomed. The experience of walking through the night alongside multigenerational Tamil families, past hundreds of small shrines, is one that most participants describe as the single most powerful night of the tour.
What is the Ramana Maharshi Ashram visit and what can I expect?
Sri Ramanasramam in Tiruvannamalai is the ashram established around Ramana Maharshi, the South Indian sage who lived at the foot of Arunachala from 1899 until his death in 1950. His teaching of self-inquiry — the practice of turning attention to ask 'Who am I?' — is among the most direct and widely practiced forms of non-dual inquiry in the contemporary Western spiritual world. The visit includes time in the Old Hall where Ramana received visitors for decades, the samadhi shrine, and guided group meditation. Your guide introduces the practice of self-inquiry in the space where it was transmitted.
Is the 15-day South India tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Yes — and it is particularly well designed for first-timers. Smukti handles all logistics, navigation, temple etiquette briefings, and cultural translation so participants can be fully present without managing the considerable complexity of independent travel in South India. A pre-journey online orientation session is included. Group size is capped at 14 so every participant receives personal attention. Many past participants had never been to India and describe the guided format as essential for a first encounter with the country's depth.
What is the Ayurveda massage session at Kovalam and is it included?
On the final day of the tour at Kovalam beach in Kerala, participants receive an Ayurvedic treatment session — a traditional South Indian massage using warm medicated oils, designed to restore balance to the body after two weeks of travel, temple visits, and spiritual intensity. The session is conducted by trained Ayurvedic therapists at a vetted facility in Kovalam. It is included in the tour price and serves as a natural integration and closing experience before departure from Trivandrum.
